Two UK football fans, who were involved in an incident on a train traveling to a 2018 World Cup match in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, were drunk and now face administrative penalties, the Russian transport police said Monday.
Earlier on Monday, the Reuters news agency reported that a UK national who was traveling to Volgograd was forced off the train and detained by the police after "a dispute with a police officer."
"Cases of administrative offenses were initiated against both foreigners for appearing in public places under the influence of alcohol. Besides, a case of administrative offense was initiated against the citizen who refused to follow the lawful demands of a police officer," police said.
According to the police, one of the intoxicated UK nationals broke glass in a train carriage and injured his hand. The fan was taken to a hospital in the town of Yelets. He received medical attention and asked to be discharged.
The police added that the second UK national, who was also drunk, decided to leave the train while it was staying at the Yelets station after he learned that his compatriot had been taken to hospital.
Other UK nationals tried to stop him, which resulted in a fight. The drunk fan did not react to any instructions given by the police officer who was traveling on the train.
The UK national was taken to Yelets transit police station for further questioning.
