STERLING SAVES CITY

Manchester City moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after Raheem Sterling’s late winner saw off Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Despite dominating possession, Pep Guardiola’s side were given one of their toughest tests of the season as they were forced to recover from a goal down to earn their 12th league victory of the campaign.

The hosts defended valiantly throughout and took an unlikely lead on the stroke of half-time, when Nicolas Otamendi turned the ball into his own net from a corner.

City equalised immediately after the restart, after Sterling was brought down inside the area by defender Scott Malone and Sergio Aguero calmly converted the subsequent penalty.

In front of a passionate home crowd, Huddersfield continued to frustrate the league leaders with a series of blocks and last-ditch challenges in the final third.

Yet, with six minutes remaining, substitute Gabriel Jesus saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Jonas Lössl before the ball cannoned off Sterling and nestled into the net.

The winner sparked jubilant celebrations from the City players and in the aftermath of the event, Huddersfield's Rajiv van la Parra was sent off for a push on Leroy Sane.

BARCA SALVAGE A POINT AFTER MESSI GOAL RULED OUT

Barcelona dropped their first points of the season via a 1-1 draw away at Valencia in La Liga.

The hosts were also unbeaten prior to kick off, after nine wins and three draws in the league, and Los Che remain second in the league following the draw at the Mestalla.

Barca were unfortunate not to take the lead in the first half when Lionel Messi’s long-range effort was spilled by goalkeeper Neto and clearly crossed the line.

But the goal wasn’t given, and Valencia went ahead in the 60th minute when Rodrigo turned home Jose Gaya's low cross from the left.

Ernesto Valverde’s side equalised with eight minutes remaining when Jordi Alba lashed a stunning volley past Neto.

The result means that Barca stay four points clear at the head of the table.

PSG RUNNIG AWAY IN FRANCE

PSG defeated their nearest challengers Monaco 2-1 at Stade Louis II to increase the gap to nine points at the top of Ligue One.

The visitors took the lead on 19 minutes when Julian Draxler picked out Edinson Cavani in the area and the Uruguayan striker broke the deadlock with a neat finish.

Neymar then doubled his side's lead from the penalty spot seven minutes after the restart after he was bundled over by Almamy Toure.

Joao Moutinho added a late consolation goal for Monaco nine minutes from time.

RODGERS MAKES HISTORY

Celtic retained the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Hampden Park.

The result means that manager Brendan Rodgers becomes the first manager since Jock Stein to win four domestic trophies in a row.

After a goalless first half, The Hoops took the lead in the 49th minute when James Forest curled a fine effort into the far corner.

Nine minutes later, Motherwell’s Cedric Kipre was shown a controversial red card after tangling with Scott Sinclair inside the area before Moussa Dembele converted from the spot.

Australia’s Tom Rogic made a brief appearance as an 89th-minute substitute.
