The ongoing 2018 World Cup in Russia has equaled the record of penalties awarded, despite the tournament only being deep into the first round.
During the Saudi Arabia-Egypt encounter, that took place in Volgograd on Monday, Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan awarded the Saudis with two spot kicks in the first half, meaning a total of 18 penalties have been given since the tournament kicked off.
Same number of penalties were given at 1990 World Cup in Italy, 1998 World Cup in France and and 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
