Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov said Sunday that Yuri Zhirkov was almost certain to play no further part in the World Cup. The veteran defender was taken off at half time with what appeared to be an injury.
"I'm afraid, this was Zhirkov's last World Cup match. Maybe he'll be ready for the final only. He went [on the pitch] with his leg injured," Cherchesov told journalists.
Russia beat Spain on penalties and reached their first-ever World Cup quarter-finals since the break-up of the Soviet Union.
In the last eight, Russia will face the winner of Croatia and Denmark encounter in Nizhny Novgorod later on Sunday. The quarterfinal will take place at Fisht Stadium in Sochi on 7 July.
