EXCLUSIVE: South Melbourne's new Kiwi coach Vaughan Coveny is hoping his New Zealand connections can land Phoenix striker Costa Barbarouses for an off-season loan.
Coveny, who takes charge of his first senior team next week when South begin pre-season preparations for VPL 2010, says his visit to New Zealand this weekend will be more than just about the All-Whites World Cup qualifier .
The former All-White, Wellington Phoenix and Jets striker is also hoping to convince Barbarouses that a loan spell at one of the biggest clubs in Australia's second-tier leagues will give him a similar boost to his previous Aussie spell.
Last year, Barbarouses, now 19, was loaned out by Phoenix to play under Paul Carter at NSW Premier League Macarthur Rams. It gave the skilful striker valuable first team experience after breaking into the Phoenix first team late in season four.
The rising star has been in stunning form over recent weeks with a goal against Sydney and an unforgettable lay-off to set up a goal against Newcastle Jets mid last week. He looms as one of Ricki Herbert's X-factors ahead of their push to the A-League finals.
But with the long off-season Barbarouses, like other players, needs to play regularly to assist his continued development. That's where the former Phoenix favourite and all-time highest All-White goalscorer Coveny could help.
"It'd be lovely if we could get him," Coveny told au.fourfourtwo.com. "And the way he's going at the moment, he's playing really well for Wellington.
"It's a possibility, especially when you're young and you don't get a lot of game time like in Wellington who don't have a national youth league team We could possibly tap into that market. I'll speak to him when I'm back."
Coveny, who is due to complete his AFC "B" coaching licence late this month, will also cast an eye over the NZ FC, which kicked off last week, in the hope of luring some of the best talent across the Tasman.
One player Coveny has signed is Aussie keeper Peter Zois. The former Olyroo 2000 squad member spent nine years in Holland with NAC Breda and Willem II up until 2007.
South Melbourne's home ground at Bob Jane Stadium in South Melbourne will undergo extensive renovations mid-season 2010. It's likely that the club will relocate temporarily to Olympic Park at that point.
But when the renovations are complete, the club's facilities will be second to none, says Coveny.
He added: "And there'll be no stone unturned to prepare the players for this season."
