NEWCASTLE Jets produced their second 10-man victory in a week in a 2-0 win over Gold Coast United in their A-League clash at EnergyAustralia Stadium tonight.
Newcastle dominated from the outset peppering the Gold Coast goal in the first half but visiting goalkeeper Glen Moss made a number of crucial saves to keep his side in the match.
Newcastle's Ali Abbas went within a whisker of scoring just after half-time with a shot that crashed off the crossbar before he eventually broke the deadlock with a crisply taken left foot shot in the 77th minute.
The home side was reduced to 10 men just a minute later when inspirational skipper Ljubo Milicevic was sent off for his second yellow card offence.
But talismanic striker Sasho Petrovski wrapped up the win for the Jets when he slotted home in the 81st minute.
The win equals Newcastle best run of games without a loss and lifts them into fifth place on the Hyundai A-League ladder, just five points behind the Central Coast Mariners, while the Gold Coast remain in third.
The Jets applied all the early pressure with Englishman Francis Jeffers going close in the ninth minute before Italian import Marcello Fiorentini fired narrowly over the bar a few moments later.
Jeffers had two golden chances to score on the 25 minute mark but could only fire both chances into Moss.
Bruce Djite had the visitors' only shot on goal in the first half when unleashed a powerful low shot from outside the box that forced in-form Jets goalkeeper Matthew Nash into a fine diving save to see the teams locked 0-0 at half-time.
The Jets went within inches of breaking the deadlock just three minutes after the break when a Tarek Elrich flick-on header put Abbas into space. The Iraqi international took the ball to the edge of area before unleashing a left footed curling shot that beat Moss only to crash into the underside of the crossbar and bounce on the goal-line and away from goal.
The Jets eventually broke the in the 77th minute when Kasey Wehrman laid the ball off for Abbas who took the ball into the area and around Djulbic before slamming a vicious left foot drive into the back of the net.
Newcastle were dealt a blow just a minute later however when skipper Ljubo Milicevic was shown his second yellow card after bringing down Adam Traore, leaving the home side with just 10 players for the remaining 12 minutes of the match.
It didn't matter though as Petrovski, who had come on in the 67th minute, sealed the victory with his fourth goal in as many matches. Moss could only parry away a Wehrman freekick from 25 metres and Petrovski was on hand to control the ball off his chest and then knee before threading a shot from an acute angle into the corner.
