With star striker Boaz Solossa likely to be sidelined for the tournament which gets under way on July 7 after breaking his ankle in the 3-0 victory over Hong Kong on Friday, the home side were looking for a morale-boosting victory over their neighbours.

But Fazrul Nawaz stroked home an early penalty to ensure it was Singapore, who had Haris Harum dismissed in the first-half, that took the spoils.

Indonesia got off to a terrible start as keeper Ferry Rotinsulu brought down Nigerian-born striker Agu Casmir in the box and Nawaz converted the spot-kick to give Singapore the lead after just two minutes.

The hosts came close to equalising but Singapore stopper Hassan Sunny did well to keep out Ismed Sofyan's curling free-kick from the edge of the area before Harun received his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the 36th minute.

However, his side held on until the break before Indonesia stepped up the pressure in the second half only to spurn a number of chances.

Sunny denied striker Saktiawan Sinaga just after the hour mark but the most notable opportunity arrived on 63 minutes when strike partner Zainal Arif drifted past Muhammad Arif but fired his shot over the bar with just the keeper to beat.
