We've chosen two moments of madness to remember - one recent and one from yester-year. Few people will ever forget Zinedine Zidane's last act on a football pitch. His extra-time brain explosion which saw him head-butt Italy's Marco Matterazzi led to a red card for Zidane and an undignified end to a distinguished career. Whether it cost France the World Cup can be debated but you would have certainly backed Zizou to have scored his spot kick as he had done earlier in the final.

Worse still from Spain 82, was German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher's assault on Frenchmen Patrick Battiston in the semi final. Battiston was left unconscious, two teeth lighter and with damage to his vertebrae. Now UEFA big wig Michel Platini, whose through ball sends Battiston clear said in an interview that he thought Battiston was dead. Incredibly the referee awarded a goal kick to Germany and did not punish the German keeper. Thankfully, Battiston made a full recovery and played on for a further 9 years as a professional.
