Coinciding with International Women’s Day, adidas has unveiled Spain’s 2019 Women’s World Cup home jersey.

With adidas having released jerseys for Germany and Sweden which are loose throwbacks to iconic football shirts from the 1990s, it would seem that Spain has received similar treatment, with the famous red, blue and gold colouring making a return to emulate the nation’s strip from the USA 1994 World Cup.

Starting with the basics, the primarily red shirt is complemented by a navy-blue collar and ‘adidas 3-stripes’ along the shoulders, as well as a very subtle horizontal pinstripe pattern which appears across the front of the jersey.

The real ‘throwback’ element comes from the vertical diamond pattern which appears in two (and a half-ish) columns down the kit’s front-left side.

Whilst not a direct copy from the 1994 kits, the pattern is very similar and is reminiscent of adidas’ signature ‘glitch’ styling characteristic.

Currently ranked 12th in the world, Spain’s female footballers aren’t quite as prolific as some of their world-renowned male counterparts, but have some incredible firepower in their own right, with 28-year-old Atlético Madrid striker Jennifer Hermoso scoring 7 goals from 8 appearances in the qualifiers leading up to June’s Women’s World Cup.
