ADELAIDE United and Central Coast Mariners are understood to be interested in hosting A-League games in the Northern Territory and Canberra respectively next season.
It is expected each club will be required to play one home game in a regional area for the upcoming 2011/2012 A-League season.
The Adelaide Advertiser reported Reds chairman Greg Griffin will travel to Darwin next weekend to discuss the idea with Northern Territory officials.
The Reds have previously played a pre-season game in Darwin against North Queensland Fury in July 2009.
"The vast majority of the Northern Territory are Adelaide United supporters and we're looking to build on that," Griffin told the Adelaide Advertiser.
Football Northern Territory boss John Meers said he wants to set up a partnership with United.
"We can play one in Darwin and the other in Alice and then rotate it each year. We're looking to develop a pathway for the juniors growing up in the Territory," he said.
"We want them looking at Adelaide United as the club they want to end up with."
The Darwin Football Stadium, which has a capacity of 5000, has been earmarked as the venue for the game.
Meanwhile, Mariners chief executive John McKay said the club would explore the option of playing games in Canberra as it did twice in 2009.
'We'd certainly be very keen to look at the opportunity to go back to Canberra,'' McKay told the Canberra Times.
''FFA is looking to partner with clubs in taking some fixtures to regional and non A-League markets.
''The ACT Government, Canberra Stadium and Capital Football were very supportive of the Mariners and the A-League when we went there for two games in 2009.''
