Matthew Conger, from New Zealand, reffed three fixtures in the A-League last season, dishing out 16 yellow cards and one red, Melbourne Victory's Rhys Williams just eight minutes into their defeat at Wellington Phoenix in January.

The American-born 39 year-old also takes charge of matches in New Zealand's ISPS Handa Premiership, and officiated at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

He will oversee the match at the Volgograd Arena with his linesmen, fellow Kiwi Simon Lount and Tevita Makasini, from Tonga.

Nigeria lost their opening match 2-0 to group leaders Croatia. Another defeat tonight would end their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

An Iceland win would also effectively end Argentina's campaign at the first hurdle as, with one game left to play, they would be three points clear in second with a much superior goal difference.

The match kicks off at 1:00am AEST.
