“If you look, I think we'll have a good side,” Aloisi told au.fourfourtwo.com. "If you go through the players available, we could have a really good starting XI – we shouldn't be scared of anyone really.

“We should be able to beat these sides we're up against."

Australia has been drawn with Qatar at home followed by China away in its first two Asian World Cup qualifiers. Tricky fixtures with Iraq also follow.

But the Mariners striker says Verbeek is the right man for a tricky situation. And if the Dutchman has a problem, there is always an old master he can call.

“Because we have such a short time to get things right before the World Cup qualifiers, you don't have to change much," he said.

"That's why I think it's a good appointment. If he's got any queries, he can just ring up Guus. And he's got Arnie [Graham Arnold] and Rob Baan here, so I think it's good.

“I've heard he's going to be at three A-League games, so he's already here and he knows what he has to do and is doing it straightaway.

"Pim knows all about Asia, he's been involved. I don't know him myself but it's not a big change for the national team.

"He's been assistant to Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat and he's coached a team at the Asian Cup – so we are going in the same path."

Despite being a national sporting icon, Aloisi, 31, is taking nothing for granted with Socceroo selection for the first World Cup qualifier on February 6 against Qatar at Telstra Dome.

When quizzed on whether he thinks he'll be selected, Aloisi said: “I hope so, but it depends on the coach of course.

"But with a lot of players being called upon from the A-League to play a big part, I'm pretty sure if called upon I'll be able to do a good job for the national team.”

He added: “Each game I play, I'm getting better and better here in Australia.”

And one other Socceroo he feels just gets better and better is Craig Moore.

Aloisi continues to hope the Roar defender decides to help out the national team – even though the former Glasgow Rangers stalwart has not made a formal decision on his national team future.

“I've been calling him and we had a coffee before the Mariners game agaiinst Roar last weekend," he revealed.

"I don't know if he's thinking about it but hopefully he'll get a call from either Pim Verbeek or the FFA to pull him in.

“I think someone like Moorey with his experience. I'm not saying who'll play but say it's Mark Milligan, he'll help him through.

"You need a few experienced players and some young players.”
