McBreen was linked with a possible move to Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United after a spell with St Johnstone in Scotland last season.

But today it was revealed the 31 year old striker had signed a deal with Blue Square Premier League side, York City.

Several weeks of negotiations between the player, City manager Colin Walker and Chairman Jason McGill were concluded on Wednesday culminating in the striker agreeing terms with The Minstermen.

McBreen represented City on loan from Scunthorpe last season making five appearances.

He scored two goals for City in the victories over Stafford Rangers and Farsley Celtic and made a very positive impression with City fans.

He was recalled by Scunthorpe at the end of his loan period and subsequently re-loaned to St Johnstone at the end of last season where he made 7 appearances for the Scottish club.

"I'm delighted to have persuaded Daniel to join us," said York boss Walker.

"He is a big strong centre forward who will lead our strike force well next season.

"He is the final piece in the jigsaw and I now feel that we have a squad of players ready to compete in the Blue Square Premier next season."

He added: "I think he wants a fresh challenge and I think the challenge of trying to help York City get back into the Football League appealed to him.

"He's got that Australian mentality, which is a winning mentality, and a work ethos which is very, very good. I'm sure he'll bring that to the rest of the squad."

McBreen was born in Burnley but raised in Australia, and started his career at Newcastle United Jets and Universitatea Craiova in Romania before joining Falkirk in September 2004.

He scored 21 goals in 64 appearances at Falkirk until departing for Scunthorpe on a two-year deal in August 2006.

But he featured only seven times at Glanford Park and was advised that he could find another club despite having 12 months remaining on his contract.

That prompted his original loan deal at KitKat Crescent in October before he secured a permanent switch to St Johnstone, where he scored the opening goal in their Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers at Hampden Park.
