WELLINGTON Phoenix hero Paul Ifill believes the A-League's lack of promotion and relegation helps the beautiful game breathe and avoids any winning ugly syndrome.
Ifill, who played a starring role in his team's 6-0 demolition of Gold Coast United at the weekend, is loving life in the A-League and readily admits it has rejuvenated him.
The striker, who was pointed in the direction of the A-League by his former Crystal Palace teammate Nicky Carle, has no regrets about swapping the sometimes direct style of the Championship for a new challenge with Phoenix.
"I was finding it quite boring in England. At Palace we were an OK side but if I had stayed there for another season it would have been another season of mid-table obscurity," he told AAP.
"I wasn't going to get the chance to play in the Premiership again and I just wanted to try something different."
He added: "It helps that there is not promotion or relegation here, in England it is so results-orientated that teams will just and kick-and-rush to get into the Premiership.
"We try and play the right style of football and sometimes it doesn't always work, but I would rather than just lumping it up front."
