Melbourne City announced they had signed 20-year-old Melbourne-based FIFA player Marcus Gomes (@marcus_7170) during the week.

Gomes had a few setbacks on his way to become the only Australian to qualify for the FIWC in London, but hoped that was all behind him heading into the tournament.

However, after the first seven group stage matches, Gomes' dream of progressing further had come to an end.

The Aussie secured just six points from a possible 21, leaving him second last in the group of eight - with only the top four advancing to the knockout stages.

Gomes took to Twitter to vent his frustration, saying he was "extremely disappointed" and had "let myself (and) others down".

The winner of the tournament receives a grand prize of $250,000, which is 10 times more than the winner got in 2016.
