Finn Harps FC has had their club mascot, Harper the Dog sent off during a League of Ireland Premier Division game for imitating the Sligo Rovers' goalkeeper.

The mascot was seen to be pretending to save shots behind the goal resulting in him being removed from the game, causing an uproar on social media.

Here you can see Sligo Rovers attaching a photo of a dejected looking Harper being forcibly removed in the 27th minute of the game.

Many including Finn Harps' themselves have been using the hashtag #JusticeForHarper to contest the decision, with the club considering taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Photographer Clare McCahill, was at the game and told The Irish News: "He was doing things like play-acting that the wall was a lamppost - imagine what a dog would do - but it was all pretty harmless stuff."

"None of this was interfering with play, though I began to notice it and some of the Sligo Rovers fans behind me noticed, so I guess it was becoming a distraction.

"Harper was shocked, horrified and protested by throwing his hands/paws in the air before hopping over the wall into the crowd and wandering off with his tail between his legs."

While Harper's sending off brought some joy to the Sligo Rovers supporters, Harper got the last laugh as Harps went on to win the game 2-0.
