Shandong 2 Seongnam 1
Youngster Wang Yongpo was the hero for China's Shandong Luneng as his superb bicycle kick ensured a victory over Korean champions Seongnam Ilhwa in the AFC Champions League last night.
Serbian playmaker Aleksander Zivkovic opened the scoring for the hosts in the 63rd minute, converting a penalty after Han Peng had been brought down in the box.
Seongnam hauled themselves level 14 minutes later when defender Cho Byung-kuk eventually found the net following a free-kick.
But Wang scored the winner a minute later for the home team as he expertly converted Jiao Zhe's cross.
The victory puts the Chinese champions on top of Group G with six points after two successive victories.
Following a close opening few minutes, Shandong striker Li Jinyu was the first to threaten the Seongnam defence.
Li latched onto a pass from defender Nicola Malbasa in the 12th minute and ran down towards the visitor's area with only goalkeeper Kim Yong-dae to beat. But the referee ruled him offside just before he attempted a shot.
Four minutes later, a failed clearance by the Shandong defence fell to Seongnam forward Adrian Neaga but his curling shot from 20 metres missed the target.
In the 22nd minute, Seongnam's Mota won an aerial battle with centre-back and skipper Shu Chang in Shandong's box but his header flew just wide of the left post.
And nine minutes before the break, Kim Do-heon's free-kick from outside the box found captain Kim Sang Sik, but his header cleared the crossbar.
After coping with Seongnam's onslaught, Shandong started to make the most of their pace down the wings and created plenty of trouble for Seongnam's defenders.
In the 40th minute, Zivkovic came close to opening the scoring as his volley almost looped over Seongnam goalkeeper Kim, who palmed it away with a reflex save.
Seongnam coach Kim Hag-bom replaced Han Dong-won with nimble midfielder Choi Sung-kuk after the break and the substitute made an almost immediate impact.
In the 57th minute, Choi cleared Shandong's defence from the left to go one-on-on with goalkeeper Li Leilei, but his chip-shot flew wide.
Choi gave the Shandong defenders a hard time again one minute later as he passed to Mota but, with only the goalkeeper to beat, the Brazilian smashed his shot against the left post.
But Shandong opened the scoring just after the hour mark through Zivkovic's penalty.
Han Peng was fouled in the area and the Serbian stepped up to make no mistake from the spot.
Seongnam beefed up their defence and managed to draw level through Cho in the 77th minute.
But Wang stole the points for Shandong soon after when he expertly fired home with a bicycle kick.
