Chinese Super League champions Changchun Yatai made the ideal start to their first ever Asian Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win against Binh Duong of Vietnam on Wednesday.
Du Zhenyu put the hosts ahead in the fourth minute but V-League winners Binh Duong grabbed an equaliser shortly after the restart through Nguyen Anh Duc.
Cui Wei struck in the 70th minute to secure the points.
Du Zhenyu signalled the hosts' intent early on when he curled a free-kick over the visitor's wall and into the net.
An expected onslaught failed to materialise and Changchun Yatai almost conceded an equaliser in the 14th minute when Anh Duc's header rattled the crossbar.
It proved a wake-up call for as Changchun pushed forward for a second goal. They had the ball in the goal after half an hour only for the referee to disallow it for offside.
Du's free-kick five minutes before half-time drifted just wide of the post and the hosts paid the price for their profligacy when they conceded an equaliser early in the second half.
Cui Wei's backpass was too short for goalkeeper Zong Lei and the resulting rushed clearance struck Binh Duong's Philani Kubheka and deflected into the path of Nguyen Anh Duc, who slotted home.
Changchun poured forward in search of a winner and it finally came with 20 minutes remaining. Binh Duong's defence failed to deal with a free-kick and Cui capitalised to smash the ball in.
