The Wanderers took the lead in an action-packed first half with Oriol Riera opening the scoring as he put away a Bonevacia free kick with a diving header.

After going behind, Adelaide dominated proceedings and were fortunate to receive a penalty from a VAR decision, though Vedran Janjetovic saved Craig Goodwin’s effort.

He was not to deny them for long, however, and his weak punch from a cross fell straight into the path of Ryan Kitto who made no mistake with his finish.

The second-half saw Bonevacia take full control of the game as his shot from distance took a lucky deflection off an Adelaide defender before his assist for Abraham Majok’s third goal sealed the game and the points for the Wanderers.

Adelaide United

Paul Izzo – 6

There wasn’t much that Izzo could do with the three goals he conceded: the first was a result of poor marking for the free kick, the second a deflection and the final goal a result of the team’s high defensive line. Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t really tested otherwise, and he’ll be eager to make some meaningful saves next week against the Newcastle Jets.

Scott Galloway – 5

Got into dangerous positions but couldn’t put in the final ball to make it count. A poor display on the attacking sense and couldn’t handle the Wanderers forwards without the ball.

Michael Jakobsen – 5.5

The defender could not keep up with the pace of the Wanderers’ attacks as he was constantly left behind by the likes of Majok, Kamau and Bonevacia. Showed initiative when his team tried to mount a comeback by putting in long balls into attack, but they did not result in much.

Jordan Elsey – 5

Like his defensive partner, Elsey was unable to match the speed of the opposition frontline and could’ve done a better job in marking Riera for the opening goal.

Ryan Strain – 6

Strain was unfortunate that Bonevacia’s shot deflected off of him into the goal to give Wanderers the lead. Otherwise, he had an average time and couldn’t really affect proceedings on the night.

Mirko Boland – 5.5

Boland was largely anonymous and didn’t do much on the ball or the ball. He was rightfully taken off by Kurz as he sought to get something from the game.

Isaías Sánchez – 6

The captain was to his own high standards, a disappointment. Ordinary in possession and could not track the runs of Bonevacia in defence as the now Australian citizen was regularly left chasing shadows.

George Blackwood – 6.5

Blackwood tried to get his team involved with decent hold up play but couldn’t get the final pass right to open the usually leaky Wanderers defence.

Craig Goodwin – 4.5

Another key player for United that had an off-day, with his penalty being saved by Janjetović. He could’ve possibly done more for spot-kick and tried too hard to redeem himself as he looked to do it all himself rather than trying to put his teammates in.

Ryan Kitto – 8

Kitto was one of the few bright lights in an otherwise dull display from United as he took his chance well and looked the most likely to make something happen.

Jordy Thomassen – 7

Thomassen offered an outlet for his team going forward and had a few shots that troubled Janjetović. He also won the dubious penalty for his team which might have changed the end result if Goodwin had scored.

SUBS

Ken Ilso – 6

Came on in the 72nd minute and couldn’t really do much to inspire his team.

Carlo Armiento – 6

Marco Kurz brought on Armiento quite late into the game and there wasn’t much of a chance to make an impact on the game.

Michael Marrone – 6

Much like Armiento, brought on far too late to make any significant difference.

Western Sydney Wanderers

Vedran Janjetovic – 6

A typically volatile display from the Wanderers goalkeeper. Made a crucial penalty save in the first half but then his weak punch from an incoming cross fell straight to Kitto for the equaliser. He made a few regulation saves in the second half and will be hoping he retains his spot amidst another mistake.

Tarek Elrich – 6

Elrich was solid in defence but could’ve offered more of an attacking threat going forward. Took on the challenge of handling Goodwin well and barely gave his opponent a sniff of a chance.

Brendan Hamill – 7

Unlucky to concede the penalty due to VAR but was otherwise composed in defence and led the defensive line well for his team.

Tass Mourdoukoutas – 6.5

The youngster was decent and didn’t have too many troubles, though he perhaps could’ve done better in clearing away Janjetović’s wayward punch.

Tate Russell – 8

The 19-year-old continued to show that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level with a dominant performance. Never stopped running as he owned the right side of the pitch and showed his passing range with some outstanding long balls. Was booked late on as he sacrificed himself to hold the team’s lead.

Keanu Baccus – 7

Cool and tidy in possession, he kept the game ticking along nicely and barely put a pass wrong. Two wins in a row and the announcement of a 3-year contract extension with the Wanderers, Baccus will be quite pleased with his week.

Jordan O’Doherty – 6.5

O’Doherty was a dependable midfielder for Markus Babbel tonight as he shielded the defence well and pressed the opposition when necessary.

Roly Bonevacia – 9.5

Bonevacia continued his exhilarating form as had a night to remember, completely running the show with direct involvement in every goal for the Wanderers. Started off the night with a delightful assist, scored the second off a fortunate deflection and put Majok through for the third. With performances like this, it’s not hard to see why Perth Glory are reportedly interested in him.

Abraham Majok – 6.5

Consistently got behind the defence throughout the game but couldn’t get his decision-making right in the box. Finally took his chance late in the second half to clinch the three points for the Wanderers.

Bruce Kamau – 7

Made a few good runs in behind that troubled the Adelaide defence but his final ball was lacking. Had a decent game before being replaced by Mitchell Duke in the 67th minute.

Oriol Riera – 7

The Spaniard will be relieved to finally get back on the scoresheet after 8 matches without a goal. Was a classic Riera goal as he gave himself space to run and put in a diving header to give his team the lead.

SUBS

Mitchell Duke – 7

Duke continued to have an impact from the bench as his headed pass for Bonevacia from a goal kick was the catalyst to put the game beyond doubt as his header eventually led to the Wanderers’ final goal.

Alexander Baumjohann – 6

Baumjohann returned from a lengthy injury spell and retained possession well to deny Adelaide as much of the ball as possible as the Wanderers looked to preserve their lead.

Rashid Mahazi – 6

Mahazi came off the bench late but still had time to get a shot on goal, though it was straight to Izzo.
