Adelaide United hosted Western Sydney Wanderers at Coopers Stadium in the last fixture in Round 9. Coming off losses last time around, both clubs were desperate for the three points.
The Boxing Day clash kicked off in very hot conditions in Adelaide tonight at around 33 degrees. The game started as a cagey affair with both teams looking for openings and there were chances for both sides.
Two free-kicks for the Reds in particular, but they couldn’t capalise. One mistake from Nathan Konstanopoulos - a sloppy tackle in the penalty area on Tarek Elrich - lead to Oriol Riera putting Western Sydney one-nil up to end the first-half.
Adelaide came out of the traps with good intent and purpose in the second-half and equalised through some good work by Scott Galloway down the left-hand side, slotting the ball into the 6 -yard line, creating a nice deflection for Nikola Milusenic to tap in.
Then, with the momentum, a delightful pass by Isaias to find Milusenic who stroked the ball low and hard through the keepers' legs.
As soon as Jordan Elsey was sent off after collecting two yellow cards for leading with his arm, the Wanderers moved the ball quickly down the right-hand side and Josh Risdon found Bruce Kamau, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to equalise.
Overall a good game of football, finishing 2-2.
ADELAIDE UNITED
Paul Izzo – 7
50th game for Izzo. Quality save denying WSW getting the opening goal. Saved Riera's penalty but could do nothing about the rebound. Good saves in second-half. Beaten by Kamau's strike, but again not his fault.
Scott Galloway – 7.5
Got forward early on. Good control of the ball. Has his work cut out with Kamau's pace. He supplied the cross, with a deflection for Mileusnic to tap in. Worked tirelessly for his team throughout the game.
Michael Jakobsen – 6
Needs to release the ball quicker but still solid in defence.
Jordan Elsey – 6.5
Good range of passing, better first-half performance than last time out. After he was booked in the first-half, he received a second card for leading with his arm on Riera.
Michael Marrone – 7
Good tackles early on, reading the play very well. Shame he was subbed at half-time
Nathan Konstanopoulos – 6
Worked hard in midfield trying to find space. Late sloppy tackle on Elrich which lead to a penalty. Subbed at half-time
Isaias Sanchez – 7
Quiet early on. Direct driving run attained a free kick just outside the box. Couple of sloppy passes from the Spaniard but he proved it was fleeting with a perfect pass for Adelaide's second goal
Vince Lia – 6
Wild shot at goal early on. Needed to control his passing
Craig Goodwin – 6
His free kick deflected off the wall, bouncing off the side post. Couple of decent direct runs. Good pass to Galloway that lead to Adelaide going 2-1 up. Worked hard.
Ben Halloran – 6
Relatively quiet, dropping deep to pick up the ball. Definitely not being played in the right position. Needs to be stronger when in possession.
Nikola Mileusnic – 7.5
Another attacking midfielder who had a quiet start. Too slow to release the ball. Good cross early in the second-half and it was an easy tap in to equalise. Fantastic start to the second-half, wonderful strike to go through the legs of the keeper.
SUBS
Ryan Strain – 6
Showed good energy when he came on.
Taylor Regan – 6
Couple of sloppy passes putting his teammates in a dangerous position when they were defending. Defended well with his head.
Ken Ilso – N/A
Subbed 15 minutes after he was introduced due to Elsey being sent off
WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS
Nick Suman – 6
Looked comfortable in goal for his first start. Made to look silly allowing Adelaide's second goal go through his legs. Young lad will learn from that.
Tarek Elrich – 7
Had a good first-half, getting forward well. Subbed in second-half.
Brendon Hamill – 7
Decent first-half, quiet but still going about his job.
Patrick Ziegler – 7
Solid defending throughout the game.
Josh Risdon – 7
Played some delightful football supporting Kamau. Late tackle in the second half could have been a second yellow card. Good pass for Kamau to equalise.
Keanu Baccus – 7
Looks comfortable when in possession, busy in the midfield. Did his job well.
Alexander Baumjohann – 7
Decent first-half, making himself busy. Powerful strike in the second half. Dictating things in the midfield. Looks comfortable on the ball with decent passing.
Jordan O’Doherty – 6
Notable nut meg, which would have pleased his 40 friends and family. Busy working in the midfield. Subbed in the drinks break in the second-half.
Bruce Kamau – 7.5
Lively start down the right-hand side. Creating a lot of space with his pace. Good tracking back and defending. Causing Galloway some headaches, generally a lot to think about. Quick feet. Smashed the ball into the back of the net to equalise. Always looking dangerous throughout the match.
Oriol Riera – 7
Needed more support from his fellow midfielders early in the game. Slopping tackle late on in the first half. Strong header but fantastic save from Izzo. Casual penalty shot but managed to spare his blushes by slotting home the rebound.
Roly Bonevacia – 7
Pulled back Goodwin and was lucky to get away with it. Putting himself about, trying to unsettle Adelaide’s defence. Worked hard tonight.
Subs
Nick Fitzgerald – N/A
Rashid Mahazi – 5
Reckless tackle late on against Strain.
Raul Llorente – 6
Made some decent runs into the box but lacked quality.
