“I really think the national team should be looking at younger players rather than me in the future. There are two young strikers at my club Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite who have potential,” says Agostino.

Some see Agostino as a like-for-like replacement for Viduka should he, as expected, quit the national team after the Asian Cup to concentrate on becoming a Magpie legend at Newcastle United. Strong, powerful in the air and a good targetman, Agostino, 32, would make sense.

“I've not retired from the national team. If they call then great but I really just want to focus on Adelaide United,” says Agostino, who signed from German second division club Munich 1860 recently.

“I'm so proud and happy that I got to play for my country 20 times,” adds Agostino, who was part of our 2001 World Cup campaign including winning the penalty that gave the Socceroos a 1-0 home win over Uruguay.
