Atletico are now undefeated in 14 matches in all competitions and yesterday's 2-0 victory over Real Betis propelled them up to fifth in the Primera Liga table.

Despite being 11 points behind favourites Barcelona, Aguero claims his side can bring the title back to the Vicente Calderon for the first time since 1996.

"Barcelona are playing very well and if they continue like this they can win it, but they can also have bad games and that is why we can fight for La Liga," he said.

"It's already 14 games without losing and now we're going to go for the 15th. We want to continue this run.

"I think we are mentally prepared and with our quality we can remain at the top.

"We always have confidence in finishing as champions and we know what we have to do to catch Barca.

"At the moment they are playing well but they will surely have bad games."

Atletico have lived for so long in the shadow of their illustrious neighbours Real Madrid.

However, troubled times at the Bernabeu have seen the champions slide down the table and Aguero's side are now a point above their bitter rivals.

"Today we are happy because we won a difficult game against Betis yesterday," continued the Argentina forward. "Yes we have passed Real Madrid in the table but there remains a lot of La Liga left and we have to focus on continuing this positive run.

"We are all happy, the team, the club and the fans. This is what we want, to be calm and that everything continues like this in the future.

"It's pleasing to be above Real Madrid in the table, the same as it is to be above any other big team like Barcelona, Villarreal, Valencia or Sevilla.

"Now we have to focus on getting a good result at Espanyol in their stadium."

Aguero signed a six-year contract at Atletico in the summer of 2006 but had a less than impressive debut season.

However, he emerged as one of the league's top strikers last year, forming a formidable partnership with Diego Forlan.

The 20-year-old was the third best goalscorer in the Primera Liga last year with 20 goals - a strike rate which has seen the big clubs in Europe sit up and take note.

However, Aguero insists he is happy to remain at the Vicente Calderon.

"Regarding all the rumours that are in the newspapers about the offers that I have from other teams, I don't pay attention to them," he added. "I am happy at Atletico and my mind is only focused on finishing in June with a trophy."
