The 28-year-old passed a medical at the Amsterdam ArenA on Friday and has agreed a three-year contract.

Rommedahl, who spent the last three years in England with Charlton Athletic, has previously played in Holland for PSV Eindhoven and RKC Waalwijk.

Rommedahl is looking forward to a new challenge, but insisted his time in England had not been wasted.

He said: "Ajax fits me perfectly. I hope that Ajax think the same.

"I wanted to return to Holland very much. I played a lot of years in the Dutch Eredivisie, and I love the positive football that is played there. That absolutely counts for Ajax.

"They play on the attack and always play for prizes. But since I went to England I became more of an all-round player."

Rommedahl, a four-time Eredivisie title winner - cost £2million when he swapped PSV for Charlton three seasons ago but never quite lived up to his billing, despite going on to make 84 appearances for the Addicks.

He will now link up again with old friend Klaas Jan Huntelaar in the Ajax attack.

"Klaas also played at PSV and I know him from there," said Rommedahl.

"He even lived in a house of my wife's family; it's really fun that I can play with him again.

"I did not have to think for long when Ajax called me. I hope for everyone with an Ajax heart that we will play a fantastic season. I will do my best.

"I already trained for two weeks at Charlton Athletic so I don't have any fitness problems. I hope that I can add something to the group off the field."

Ajax coach Henk ten Cate is pleased to have acquired Rommedahl's services, and now has his sights set on further summer arrivals.

He said: "Dennis has specific qualities. He is dangerous in the deep, where you can be put back to your defence and get space.

"We must not forget that Ajax plays around 60 games per year.

"I said before that Ajax doesn't have 11 regulars. Maybe we will need 18 regular starters. So we aren't finished now.

"We want to sign [FC Groningen striker Luis] Suarez and another player. I think we have shown that we are not choosing the worst kind of players."
