NEW Al Jazira coach Caio Junior has backed Socceroo Lucas Neill claiming he put in a "perfect" performance in the weekend's 1-0 win over Ajman.
The Australian has attracted criticism from some quarters in the UAE since his switch to Al Jazira, particularly after two howlers around the turn of the year.
Nevertheless, the 34-year-old has been an ever-present at the back this season for the UAE champions, who currently sit second in the Pro-League, having conceded 23 goals in 16 games.
Neill produced an assured display in Saturday's victory which Caio Junior, who recently took over the from sacked Franky Vercauteren, was delighted with.
“In my opinion Lucas was the best player on the field, the best, he was perfect,” the Brazilian coach told reporters.
Caio Junior also indicated the departure of Vercauteren, who was dismissed for not getting along with the players, had helped Neill's form.
“I think the confidence is back with him, he is confident in our work, he believes in our instructions and it’s not only him it’s all the players," he said.
"I’m very happy because all of the players believe in our message that we are giving to them.”
Al Jazira currently trail leaders Al Ain by seven points in the Pro-League with six games to play. The Abu Dhabi club are top of Group A in the AFC Champions League after two wins from two games.
