The 2006 AFC Champions League semi-finalists Al Qadisiya secured a return to the continental championship on Monday with an impressive 5-0 win over Al Salmiya in the Kuwait Emir Cup final.
Al Qadisiya, who were knocked out by Al Karama in the last four last year, started strongly and found themselves two goals to the good within eight minutes.
AFC Player of the Year for 2006 nominee Bader Al Mutawa opened the scoring for Al Qadisiya after only 60 seconds when he launched a quick attack from midfield and went all the way to beat Al Salmiya goalkeeper Saleh Mahdi.
Al Qadisiya made it 2-0 in the eighth minute when Nohair Al Shammari sent in a free-kick from the left flank which was headed home by Mesaed Nada.
Three minutes later, Al Mutawa thought he had scored his second goal of the night when his powerful header slammed against the woodwork and went in before bouncing back onto the pitch, but the referee ruled the ball had not crossed the line.
Seven minutes into the second period, Al Mutawa did score his second goal of the night with a powerful drive from the edge of the area, and two minutes later his strike partner Khalaf Al Salama made it 4-0 from the penalty spot.
In the 66th minute, Al Qadisiya's Ivory Coast midfielder Ibrahima Keita sealed the win by scoring the fifth goal, beating the offside trap and drilling home from inside the area.
Al Salmiya had a late chance to reduce the deficit in the 90th minute but their striker Hamad Al Harbi saw his spot-kick saved by Al Qadisiya goalkeeper Nawaf Al Khaldi.
