The IFF made the decision at an emergency meeting following Iran's 2-1 home defeat to Saudi Arabia in a World Cup qualifier.

Kafashian refused to name the coaches on the IFF's shortlist, but revealed that Daei's replacement would not be arriving from overseas.

"At the current time we have asked Rotte Muller to take temporary charge of the team while we look at the different options," he said.

"We have already ruled out appointing a foreign coach".

Daei was appointed as Iran coach in March last year after the IFF tried and failed to convince both Portuguese Artur George and Spaniard Javier Clemente to take up the post.
