THE A-LEAGUE finals may be in full swing but in the National Youth League, the race for the finals heats up this weekend in the final round of the regular season.
The contest for the Premiership plate is a two horse race - between the Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory - and will be decided on Saturday afternoon, however, the battle for finals spots is still on for three other sides, two of them going head to head on Sunday.
Central Coast Mariners v Sydney FC
4.00 PM (EDT) at Pluim Park, Central Coast
Round 27 kicks off at Pluim Park on the Central Coast as the table-topping Mariners play host to Sydney FC. The Mariners will clinch the Premier's Plate with a win, but Sydney won't be easy competition. The Sky Blues know that three points will secure a finals berth for themselves and a shot at a second straight grand final win. Pending other results, a draw could be enough to achieve both teams' goals, however, both teams are likely to pull out all stops in this do or die fixture.
Player to watch: Iain Ramsay (Sydney FC) - the talented midfielder has scored three goals in his last two starts for the Baby Blues and has been in fine form in the latter part of the season, making his A-League debut against Melbourne Victory in the first leg of the A-League major semi-final a few weeks ago.
Perth Glory v Newcastle Jets
5.00 PM (WST) at Clipsal Stadium, Inglewood
Unlike their high-flying A-League counterparts, Newcastle Jets have had a largely disappointing season in the National Youth League and will finish the season in seventh place, regardless of any of the results in this round. However, they will be out to avoid a record equaling fifth straight defeat. On the other hand, Perth Glory have the Premiership as an incentive to win the fixture and will want to maintain their perfect record against the Jets.
Player to watch: Steve Hesketh (Perth Glory) - Hesketh has had an outstanding season in the Perth Glory defence which has, until now, been the equal best in the competition.
Australian Institute of Sport v Melbourne Victory
1.00 PM (EDT) at AIS, Canberra
This might be the only fixture of the round that won't affect the final standings but both teams will be going for the win. Melbourne Victory's A-League side has been plagued by injuries and suspensions and the Victory youth boys will be keen to impress manager Ernie Merrick in the hopes of getting a call up for Victory's remaining A-League finals series matches. For the AIS, the harsh introduction to the National Youth League hasn't always been pleasant or easy but they do have the comfort of knowing that, last time out against Melbourne, they earned an impressive 3-1 over them.
Player to watch: Aziz Behich (Melbourne Victory) - an outstanding season from the Victory youth captain saw him promoted to the A-League during the regular season. He's played in all but 3 of the Victory youth's games this season and scored in 6 of them - a great return for the young midfielder.
Adelaide United v Gold Coast United
3.00 PM (CDT) at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide
Gold Coast visit Hindmarsh Stadium sitting in a precarious situation - they can only afford a loss if the Mariners beat Sydney the day before. Adelaide haven't secured their finals place either, but a draw is good enough for the Baby Reds. Gold Coast shook off their run of draws last week with a convincing 5-0 win against the AIS and will take their goal scoring confidence with them to the City of Churches. Adelaide haven't been short of goals in recent weeks either, netting 12 in their past four matches, so expect an entertaining and attacking display of football from both teams.
Player to watch: Francesco Monterosso (Adelaide United) - barring a minor miracle, Monterosso will finish the 2009/10 NYL season as the competition's golden boot winner for the second time in a row. He has only featured briefly in the A-League, even though he's scored 16 goals from 21 matches for the Adelaide youth.
