NEW Zealand went down 2-0 to Chile overnight in Nelspruit in their last training run before their World Cup opener against Slovakia next Tuesday.
The All Whites were looking to put the final touches on their impressive lead-up form, which included a 1-0 win over world No.16 Serbia, but in a match which was divided into three thirds, instead of two halves, Chile prevailed thanks to goals from Gonzalo Fierro and Esteban Paredes.
Ricki Herbert would have been pleased with his side's performance throughout the first two thirds of the match, but Fierro put Chile ahead on 68 minutes and Paredes, who has two goals previously ruled out, finally got his name on the score sheet in the 72nd minute.
Herbert looked to test his side's depth and tried out many of his squad, and in the end, that probably cost the team a result with Chile making merry late in the game.
In a match played in front of 7000 locals, New Zealand created very few scoring chances, relying heavily on long balls.
Herbert will hope that things improve ahead of the All Whites' first World Cup match in 28 years against Slovakia next Tuesday.
