WERDER Bremen director of sport Klaus Allofs has distanced himself and the club from the hooligans who threw objects at home fans during last night's UEFA Cup tie with St Etienne in France.
Missiles and fireworks were thrown from the area housing the Bremen supporters into areas occupied by St Etienne fans after the Bundesliga side took a sixth-minute lead through Sebastian Prodl.
Bremen went on to score a second and eventually drew 2-2 to go through to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.
But Allofs found little pleasure in the result due to the behaviour of some of his club's followers.
"We are ashamed of such action because it is simply unsporting," he said.
"That costs Werder Bremen a lot of money because we will get a large fine.
"Furthermore, people's lives are put at risk when missiles are thrown at the opposition fans' areas and we cannot understand it in the slightest.
"We will do all we can to find those responsible and all we can do to react is ban them from stadia."
