A Sebastien Le Toux hat-trick gave Major League Soccer newcomers the Philadelphia Union the first win in their history, a 3-2 home win over DC United.
Playing their inaugural home game at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team, and against their nearest rivals from Washington DC, a crowd of almost 35,000 saw the Union bounce back from an opening day defeat at the Seattle Sounders.
Frenchman Le Toux, signed from Seattle, fired Philadelphia into a 2-0 half-time lead before DC hit back in the 63rd and 70th minutes through Santino Quaranta and Jaime Moreno.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Le Toux grabbed the winner, leaving DC United winless after three games of the 2010 campaign.
Le Toux's was not the only hat-trick of the night as rookie Zack Schilawski scored three goals in the New England Revolution's 4-1 home win over Toronto FC.
Toronto had taken the lead on 28 minutes through Canadian midfield Dwayne DeRosario before Schilawski levelled two minutes after the interval.
He had his hat-trick before the hour was up and Sainey Nyassi added a fourth for the Revolution in the 66th minute to hand former Liverpool and Scotland star Steve Nicol the 100th regular season victory of his MLS career.
Edson Buddle continued his great scoring start to the campaign as he netted both goals in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2-0 win at the Houston Dynamo.
Buddle took his and the Galaxy's goal tally to five in three games as last year's MLS Cup runners-up completed their third straight shut-out of the season to go five points clear at the top of the Western Conference.
On a day that saw all 16 MLS teams in action, the New York Red Bulls lost their first game of the new season, falling 2-0 to Chivas USA at The Home Depot Centre in Carson, California.
The home side went in front two minutes into the second half when a shot from Jesus Padilla rebounded off the post and went in off New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. That was Chivas's first goal of the season and Padilla doubled the tally in time added on to seal the win.
Defending MLS champions Real Salt Lake snatched an equaliser in injury time to draw 2-2 at home with the Seattle Sounders. Former Arsenal schoolboy Steve Zakuani had opened the scoring for Seattle while Alvaro Saborio headed home the leveller for Real Salt Lake in the 93rd minute.
In other games, the Kansas City Wizards stayed unbeaten with a 1-0 win at home to the Colorado Rapids, the San Jose Earthquakes won 2-1 at the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew drew 2-2 at FC Dallas.
