After exiting Qatari club Al-Rayyan in recent weeks, Allsopp will now become one of the few Aussies ever to play in the American MLS after inking a two year deal with the Washington club.

However Allsopp won't play alongside former Victory star Fred. DC United have signed Valerenga goalkeeper Troy Perkins in a first round trade that saw Fred move to Philadelphia Union.

Allsopp will fill the void left by departing DC striker Luciano Emilio, the 2007 MLS most valuable player.

Allsopp's agent Richie Hinton from Elite Sports Properties says the MLS franchise has been tracking Allsopp since Fred signed with the US club following Victory's season two grand final win.

Allsopp, who's back in Australia on a break, will join up with his new club in February ahead of the start of the MLS in March.

"Fred gave him massive raps when he arrived at DC and the club has been tracking him ever since. When he became available after leaving Al-Rayyan, the deal went through very smoothly," Hinton told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Hinton said Allsopp's move away from Qatar was not for footballing reasons for a striker who bagged six goals in 12 games in the Q-League.

He added: "It's a famously volatile region and the writing was on wall when they replaced the coach with last year's coach.

"He went with last year's striker from Oman and with the 3 + 1 rule for the ACL, Danny was kind of squeezed out."

DC United are delighted to have snared the big striker's signature at last.

"Danny has shown an ability to score goals wherever he's been and we are confident he will continue to do so for D.C. United," said United General Manager Dave Kasper on the club's official website.

"He's an athletic forward with a nose for the goal who will complement our other attacking players and we look forward to having him in with the team."

Allsopp himself cannot wait to get started and is expected to begin training with his new teammates at the end of the month.

"I'm delighted to be joining such a successful club as D.C. United," said Allsopp. "Their history speaks for itself and I'm really excited about the move.

"Playing in MLS is a challenge and I am really looking forward to it. I'm hoping to make a real impact to help carry on the club's great tradition."
