The Italian’s addition comes following the recruitment of Fahid Ben Khalfallah, who will turn 35 three days after Brisbane’s 2017/18 A-League season opener.

Roar have also re-signed 36-year-old goalkeeper Michael Theo and 32-year-old ex-Greece international Avraam Papadopoulos this close season.

Those four are alongside Jade North (35), Thomas Kristensen (34), Brett Holman (33) and captain Matt McKay (34) on the Roar squad list.

Brisbane may have let go of German veteran Thomas Broich, 36, in the off-season, but young stars Jamie Maclaren and Brandon Borrello have also departed, affecting the balance of the squad.

“People are always going to make comments and always have an opinion,” Aloisi said.

“People had an opinion when we signed Jamie Maclaren, saying he wont get to double figures and he scored 40 goals in two seasons.

FBK will be 35 in October

“As a coach you have to expect it and understand that but I have a belief in what we’re doing. We believe we’re headed in the right direction.

“The players that we’ve signed have added to our squad and the ones we’ve already got here are very strong.”

Maccarone scored seven goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for relegated Serie A club Empoli in 2016-17.

Aloisi was confident the former Middlesbrough frontman would bring plenty to the side despite his age.

"I look at the way a player moves, whether he's 18 or in his 30s, it’s important that he moves well and he’s not struggling with injury,” Aloisi said.

North may be 35 but has made the past two PFA A-League Team of the Seasons

“It's never about their age - it's about their ability and what they can do on the pitch. I’m happy with the signings and the season coming.”

Aloisi added: “He played over 20 games last season. The season before he played close to 40 games.

“In terms of games, he’s definitely got the legs. Serie A is a pretty good league too.”

Former Socceroo Aloisi revealed Maccarone’s signing came after ex-Australia international Vince Grella, who is the Italian’s agent, contacted him while on holiday.
