The Brisbane Roar coach will always be remembered for his penalty against Uruguay, which sent the Socceroos into the 2006 World Cup for the first time since 1974.

Twelve years on, the Socceroos are back at ANZ Stadium again on Wednesday night, this time against Honduras and coming off a goalless draw away on Saturday morning.

“I think we’ve got the upper hand but we have to make sure we perform,” Aloisi said.

“I thought the Socceroos did really well on Saturday, the referee gave the penalty and then took it away… I don’t know the reason why, whether the assistant referee thought it was offside or not, but I thought they deserved to get the win.

“It was important they didn’t concede, and now we’ve got a great opportunity. I think if we can perform like that, knowing what Ange has done in the past, he will have players that are fresh to come in and do well.

“Plus the travel, the Hondurans, they’re not going to be used to the travel.”

And Craig Foster and Simon Hill go wild...

Aloisi also said it didn't matter whether Australia won ugly, or through the dreaded shootout once again.

“I don’t care how we get through, just as long as we get through,” he said.

“Whether it’s penalties or scoring in the 120th minute. It doesn’t matter, as long as we get through. (And) I think we’re going to.”

Aloisi has his own headaches at the moment as his club remain winless this season, but came away with a 1-1 draw against Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

He said he feels hard-done-by with his injuries, with Fahid Ben Khalfallah now added to the list after he was a late omission from the Victory game, feeling groin tightness during the warm-up.

Corey Brown, Thomas Kristensen, Luke Devere and Michael Theo are among the key outs.

However Aloisi feels the injuries were out of his control and are simply down to bad luck.

“When you get things that go against you, which are completely out of your control, then it is bad luck. If it’s muscle injuries, then you have to start reflecting on what you’re doing,” Aloisi said.

“I must have walked under a ladder or something because yesterday Jade (North) gets a knock, Fahid felt something in the warm-up and then two weeks ago Luke lands awkwardly.

“Injuries you can’t prevent because they’re knocks, we seem to be getting them, Dane Ingham away with the national team and we ended up having 12 contracted players out.

“Brilliant (result against Victory) due to the circumstances and due to our start of the season, with how many players we’ve got out.”
