Roar suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of fellow A-League side Melbourne Victory at Perry Park on Wednesday night, exiting the Round of 32 stage of the Cup for the third time in four years. 

While Victory fielded a strong line-up, Aloisi's Roar were slightly under strength. 

New Italian marquee Massimo Maccarone started on the bench, while the likes of Fahid Ben Khalfallah, Michael Theo and Luke DeVere all missed out. 

However, experienced stars Matt McKay, Jade North, Thomas Kristensen and a host of other regulars such as Corey Brown and Jack Hingert still made the squad. 

But it was not Roar's night, with Victory advancing thanks to goals from Mitch Austin, James Troisi, Mark Milligan and a double from Besart Berisha.

“We tried to play our football and I thought at times we got into really good areas but the final execution wasn't quite there and they made us pay,” Aloisi said post-game.

“The boys kept on going and the game was good preparation for the season. We played with four young boys and it was a good experience for them.

"We want to win always but we didn't want to risk players that weren't quite ready so it was a good opportunity to see what the young boys could do.”
