National League North side Altrincham FC will wear a one-off LGBT inspired kit in support of football's stance against homophobia.

The strip will be used for a competitive game against Bradford on 16 February as the club claims they will be the first to wear a kit with the LGBT pride flag colours in a competitive fixture.

Altrincham normally play in red and white stripes, however, they will ditch those colours as well as replacing their sponsor, J Davidson & Sons with the Football vs Homophobia logo taking place on the front of the kit.

Altrincham director, Bill Waterson, told the club's website: "We believe it will be the first time anywhere in the world that a senior football club has worn a kit solely modelled on the LGBT Pride Flag."

"And Altrincham will, therefore, be creating a small moment of football history.

"Football is our national sport and therefore it is part of our national identity, and attendance at football matches should at least reflect the nation as a whole.

"It would be good to have other role models and ones which can reach a bigger audience than we can.

"The more noise we make about this issue the less of an issue it will become."

While Waterson called for clubs with a larger reach to support the cause, the Football Association, as well as LGBT charity Stonewall, have backed the move from the Manchester side.

Stonewall director of sport, Kirsty Clarke said: "It is great to see Altrincham FC will be showing their support for LGBT people and challenging anti-LGBT abuse in sport on 16 February."

"Our research shows there's a huge appetite to kick discrimination out of sports at all levels and steps like this bring us closer to the day where everyone, from players to fans, are accepted without exception."

The kits will be auctioned off after the match to raise money for LGBT youth charity, Pride Trust.
