Adelaide United stalwart Eugene Galekovic’s future is in limbo with Reds coach Guillermo Amor claiming he’s not discussed a new contract with the club captain.
The Adelaide Advertiser reported earlier this week that Galekovic was set for the exit at Coopers Stadium, with the club understood to have signed Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Paul Izzo for next season.
Speaking ahead of United’s AFC Champions League clash with Jeju United, Amor was unable to shed any light on the situation.
“We speak about a lot of things, normally the problems of the team at that moment or how his family is, but not about the future, we don’t speak,” Amor said.
“I don’t know. What’s important is the game tomorrow. We don’t know the future.”
Amor’s own future at Adelaide remains unclear given he’s out of contract at season’s end meaning he may not be in charge of the decision on any new contract for 35-year-old Galekovic.
However the Spaniard did throw some support behind the shot-stopper who has been with United since 2007, making more than 230 appearances and winning the 2014 FFA Cup and 2015-16 A-League double.
“Eugene for me is a very important player and person in Adelaide and South Australia and Australia,” Amor said.
“He’s a big player. I don’t know his future, if he stays here or not. We don’t know, I prefer to think about tomorrow.”
Amor also deferred to United general manager of football operations Ante Kovacevic when asked if the club had signed former Adelaide deputy Izzo.
“This question is for the club and Ante in this case,” Amor said.
“It’s possible, I don’t know who he’s signed or not signed… He’s a good goalkeeper.”
Coincidentally Galekovic may return to the United line-up for Wednesday’s clash with Jeju after a shoulder injury.
Amor revealed Galekovic was fit again, having not played since sustaining the injury in early February.
“He’s training well this week,” Amor said. “He can play, he’s in condition.”
Kick-off for the Adelaide-Jeju clash is 7.30pm local time (8pm AEST).
