Nabbout’s classy double in Newcastle's 2-0 win over Melbourne City in Coffs Harbour at the weekend is leading to speculation the 24-year-old could be a potential Socceroo of the future.

Nabbout’s recent resurgence comes after he was released by Melbourne Victory, sacked by Malaysian club Negeri Sembilan, then rejected by Central Coast Mariners.

The winger’s brace against Melbourne City was the high-fyling Jet's sixth goal in seven games and the former Victory man revealed playing for the Socceroos was a major ambition.

“Ultimately my goal is to play for the national team,” he said speaking to FourFourTwo. “Like I said previously I’m not going to shy away from that. I’m going to work as hard as I can to get myself on that radar and hopefully if it happens it happens. But for now I have to keep my head down and keep working hard and continue my form throughout the season.

“I have to continue playing well because there is no use being a half season player or play well for a few games. It’s a long season and there is plenty of games to go and I must continue my form.”

After being on the outer with a number of clubs, Nabbout said the key to his recent displays comes from being given a chance to play regular football.

“That year in Malaysia helped me realise my strengths and what I’m really, really, good at” he said. “It’s running at defenders and getting in behind and using my pace and power as well as my strength to outmuscle defenders and get in that box.

“I’ve got a good team around me. There is a lot of quality and they are really pushing me and helping me through it and I couldn’t really ask for a better club to play at. That’s all it is, I just needed a little bit of confidence and a kick up the butt to say to myself ‘it’s probably my last chance to play in the A-League.’ That gave me a massive motivation boost and I said to myself ‘I’ve got to make the most of it’ and so far I have been.”

Nabbout’s previous brace came during the 2012-13 A-League campaign when the then 20-year-old helped Melbourne Victory to a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Sydney FC.

After his recent exploits, Nabbout is thankful he is no longer just remembered for that moment.

“That was not the only thing I did when I was at Victory,” he said. “Obviously not many people saw behind the scenes, where I was working my butt off every day for three years. But being back here and to be recognised for the work that I’m doing now is a massive boost. I couldn’t be happier to be honest.

"At this point I know I have consolidated my spot and it just gives me some motivation to put my foot on the pedal and to keep going. Because I know I can only get better and I’ve got a lot more to give.”
