The youngster has been included in the Young Socceroos squad that will today make their first competitive appearance on the road towards the 2009 FIFA World Youth Cup in Egypt.

Redmayne, 18, is part of the 20-man squad bound for the 2007 Weifang Cup in China, which will see the Young Socceroos take on Asian rivals the Korea Republic, Iran, Uzbekistan, hosts China and Chinese Super League heavyweights Shandong Luneng.

Redmayne is one of three Hyundai A-League players selected along with Adelaide United’s Matthew Mullen and the Queensland Roar’s Tahj Minniecon.

And no-one is more delighted at Redmayne’s involvement than Mariners football manager Lawrie McKinna.

He said: “Andrew’s an outstanding talent, he’s come on in leaps and bounds and as a goalkeeper he’s a big lad and he deserves his selection.

"If you’re solid at the back, as most good teams are, that comes from the goalkeeper and I think Andrew will do a good job and help the Young Socceroos qualify for the final stages."

The Young Socceroos’ exhaustive qualification campaign for the 2009 FIFA World Youth Cup will begin in earnest this October, when they first attempt to qualify for the 2008 Asian Under 19s Championships in Saudi Arabia.

Australia’s six-nation qualification pool sees them grouped alongside domestic heavyweights the Korea Republic, Asian Cup co-hosts Indonesia and Vietnam, Hong Kong and Guam.

To advance to Asia’s showpiece youth international tournament in west Asia next year, the Young Socceroos will need to finish first or second in their group, or, be the best placed of those that finish third amongst the seven qualification pools.

McKinna said: “Going to Asia, the conditions, the grounds, the travel, it all makes it difficult.

"You can’t take any team lightly, as the Socceroos have found out.

"I’m sure the Young Socceroos will do well but it’s not going to be easy and I think whatever Australian team plays in Asia will have to be at the top of their game to qualify."

Redmayne and his team mates will today (Friday, 27 July) face Uzbekistan at 6pm AEST, before taking on Iran on Sunday, 29 July at 6pm AEST, China on Tuesday, 31 July at 6pm AEST, Shandong Luneng on Thursday, 2 August at 11am AEST and finally the Korea Republic on Saturday, 4 August at 11am AEST.
