Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou has described the crisis club's new chief executive as "a safe pair of hands".
Pompey yesterday appointed David Lampitt, the Football Association's head of football integrity, as the successor to Peter Storrie, who stepped down on March 12.
He will take up the post once his period of notice has been agreed with the FA.
Andronikou told Pompey's official website, www.www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: "I am pleased that we have attracted someone of this calibre to become chief executive.
"My objective is to ensure that the club exits from administration as soon as possible and it is critically important for Portsmouth's future that we have, in David, a chief executive who will be widely acknowledged and recognised as a safe pair of hands."
Portsmouth take on Tottenham in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday, but could be relegated from the Barclays Premier League before they take to the pitch if results go against them.
Avram Grant's side are 14 points from safety with five games to play, having been deducted nine points on March 17 for going into administration.
Lampitt added: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to take up this new challenge with Portsmouth.
"The club has been through some tough times this season and I intend to bring some stability and transparency to operations.
"Pompey have some of the best fans in the country and they deserve their great support to be matched by equally high standards of governance at the club.
"I wish Avram, the team and the fans the very best of luck in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend and look forward to coming on board as soon as possible."
Lampitt, a qualified chartered accountant, has worked at the FA since 2003 and sits on UEFA's club licensing committee.
FA chairman Lord Triesman told www.thefa.com: "It is a great tribute to him that one of our oldest and most famous clubs should look to his expertise and personal character to bring it through a time of great difficulty.
"Portsmouth's fans should take comfort in a wise, long-sighted appointment and I wish David every success."
