EXCLUSIVE: If appointed to Brisbane Roar, former national youth team coach Ange Postecoglou says his first order of business will be to fix the club culture.
Roar lead the league in the yellow card count this season. This lack of discipline was highlighted two weeks ago in a spiteful game where senior Roar players including Danny Tiatto and Charlie Miller physically targeted former Roar player Robbie Kruse.
Postecoglou aims to stamp out this culture and bring in a new era of team accountability from the top down.
"My style is to instil a culture from the coach down. If I get that opportunity it's one of the first things I'd want to instil," he told au.fourfourtwo.com. "I'd want to make sure the culture is what it should be and what the club wants to be known for and stands for.
"It's a culture of team ethos that I believe in. It's really important and players need to buy into that. It's not a matter of telling players what they have to do; it's creating a culture that everyone - the players and the club - wants to be in on."
Besieged Roar held initial discussions with Postecoglou on Wednesday following the dismissal of coach Frank Farina earlier in the week after a second alleged drink-driving charge.
Postecoglou is unsure of how the interview went but holds the club in high regard and feels he's ready for the challenge.
"This one appeals to me because I think Brisbane is a fantastic outfit," he said. "And the potential there is enormous.
"There's no doubt they're a good side. Frank did a great job but something's obviously gone wrong this year. It just hasn't come together this year. They've been disrupted."
Postecoglou, 44, began coaching 15 years ago as one of the youngest assistant coaches in the NSL. The former Socceroo took over as senior coach at South taking them to titles in the late 1990s before stepping up to Young Socceroo coach at the turn of the new millennium.
He said it was a difficult transition but one that's ultimately helped him: "After coaching senior players, I was probably not ready for coaching young players at that level. It took me at least a couple of years."
Postecoglou's Young Roos were a hit at the 2003 World Youth Cup in the UAE, defeating Brazil 3-2 to make the quarter-finals before bowing out to the hosts.
He also guided the Joeys and Young Socceroos to the second stage of their respective world championships in 2001.
But the U20s' failure to qualify through the Asian championship in 2006 and an infamous on-air stoush with SBS TV's Craig Foster cast a shadow over his career.
He's since become an on-air pundit himself with Fox Sports.
"I was a very much work in progress back in my South days, I feel with another seven years of international experience since then I've matured as a coach," the Melburnian added.
"I've always wanted to play a certain type of football - keeping possession is important."
Aside from Postecoglou, there are a number of other potential options for the Suncorp hotseat. Craig Moore has also been mentioned as a possible future coach at the club he currently skippers.
It's understood coaching is something Moore is keen to get involved in down the track. In such a scenario, Rado Vidosic would stay on as caretaker coach till the end of the season before Moore would take over for the start of the 2010/11 season.
Other potential names bandied about include John Kosmina and Paul Okon.
Another option would be to bite the bullet and find a top class overseas coach in a similar vein to Melbourne Heart.
This week, the second Melbourne A-League franchise hired Dutchman John Van't Schip, the Ajax Amsterdam assistant coach.
Roar CEO Peter McLennan has said the club will look to finalise a replacement as quickly as possible.
"Taking this back to the playing group, I think it's critical we get them settled as quickly as possible to keep the focus on the next game and hopefully another successful season," he said.
Chairman Chris Bombolas added: "Our club is determined to move forward. We hope to start working through a shortlist of potential candidates soon."
