The announcement of the 25-man Socceroos squad for November’s intercontinental play-off against Honduras was overshadowed by the barrage of questions the Australian national team boss faced on his future.

Speaking to the Australian media for the first time since speculation surrounding his coaching plans surfaced, Postecoglou deflected question after question on his future, preferring to focus on Honduras.

“Right now nothing beyond qualifying for the World Cup and getting the team ready to do that is important to me,” he said.

“We have to qualify first as I’ve said along that’s where the focus is. My energy is going to make sure we get over these two games and qualify for a fourth consecutive World Cup.”

“If you want me to talk about hypotheticals for me now is not the time I can talk about hypotheticals after.”

While Postecouglou has not made it clear what his short-term future is, what isn’t in doubt is that this current Socceroos campaign will be his last involvement with the national team.

And looking back over his four-year tenure with the Socceroos the 52-year-old belives he leaves the squad in a better place than when he started.

“I believe that the work we’ve done over the past four years has been immense," he said.

“Certainly looking at the starting point almost to the day that I took over you look at this group of players caps experience and even in their club careers I certainly think we will be in better shape at the start of the next four cycle.

"But again the biggest thing about all that is being successful in the next two games.”
