Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou says he's got no chance of scoring from open play. Literally.
The last time Australia scored a goal in the final of phase of World Cup Qualfying, that didn't involve a set piece, was in the 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in October last year.
While the introduction of the 3-4-3 formation has garnered much discussion, Australia’s inability to score from open play came into focus again after both goals in the 2-0 win over UAE came via corner's.
While some of Postecoglou’s responses at the post-match press conference created a media storm, the Socceroos boss showed his sense of humour asked about a lack of goals from open play.
“Mate, from where I am sitting I’ve got no chance of scoring from open play. Absolutely zero,” he said.
“We’ll take goals from whichever way we get them we certainly created enough tonight to score. I felt a bit for Jimmy Troisi because I though his play deserved a goal and he got a great chance to do that.
“Jackson Irvine could have scored from another header, we had opportunities but I’m not fussed by that and at the end of the day we are scoring goals and that is the most important thing.”
Mile Jedinak said while the Aussies see set pieces as one of their major goal scoring weapons, the Socceroos captain admitted they'd like to find a different way of finding the back of the net.
“We don’t like to say we don’t want to score goals from open play, we do want to score from open play,” he said.
“But we also know that we can expose the teams in our groups from set plays. It’s by design what we do we put a lot of time and effort into it.
“We do a lot of research on corners and free-kicks on the opposition and it’s no coincidence. To say that we wouldn’t like a few more in open play I’d be lying to say that we didn’t want more.
“But we’ll take things as they come tonight the performance was great and we move forward.”
