Free agent Robbie Kruse’s selection in Australia’s latest squad has caused some consternation and Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou admits his next move is crucial for his international career.
Kruse, 28, has only made seven appearances at club level during the past 12 months and recently left Chinese club Liaoning Whowin after their failure to honour their contractual obligations.
The former Melbourne Victory man had been struggling for game-time at Liaoning anyway and his immediate exit has allowed him to explore his options.
However, his situation led to some surprise when he was named in Postecoglou’s final squad for the upcoming matches against Saudi Arabia and Brazil along with the Confederations Cup.
Postecoglou acknowledged some players in the squad were lucky to be included, conceding club-less Kruse falls in that category.
“The next decision will be an important one,” Postecoglou said about Kruse.
“The key thing is, if he wants to be involved, is he gets consistent football under his belt and he hasn’t had that.
“Every move has its trepidation – the key to every move is you make sure where you go you dominate – doesn’t matter where it is.
“I think the notion of a perfect place, where you go and everything works out, doesn’t exist. It wasn’t easy for Aaron (Mooy) - he played more than 50 games, had Socceroos commitments, travel…

“Robbie is in that boat now. He gets a little bit of an opportunity to put himself in the shop window.
“I rate Krusey highly. He is still at an age where at his best he can certainly contribute at international level.
“But he is probably one of the ones who is fortunate to be in the squad.”
Postecoglou reiterated that sentiment when discussing the seven players who missed the final cut, insisting they were not unlucky.
“I don’t think there’s anyone unlucky to miss out,” he said. “At the end of the day the one thing we need to make sure is we need to set our standards high.
“The performances of guys like Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic: we want guys playing in the top leagues – that’s the measure.
“There are guys in the squad who are fortunate to be there, basically because of a decision I’ve made but hopefully they make a decision to push on their careers.
“For those who missed out, the measure should be the highest possible we’ve set. If you’re not making the standard I don’t think you’re unlucky to miss out.”

Postecoglou said there were “twin targets” in the upcoming matches, which includes fixtures against top 10 sides Brazil, Germany and Chile.
“The squad announcement reflects the combination of the twin targets we have for this month,” he said.
“Most importantly we’ve got a very important World Cup qualifier. You pick the best squad that’s available, fit and in-form. From that perspective, I’m pretty comfortable with the guys that we’ve brought in.
“Looking further ahead, we’ve brought in a couple we haven’t had before and some others we want to get some development in.
“After we play Saudi Arabia we’ve got Brazil in Melbourne and then three other top 10 nations where we can test ourselves against the best. These players will get that opportunity.”
