The Socceroos were never in the contest against the world’s number one ranked side in front of just under 50,000 fans at the MCG, conceding within 12 seconds, before letting in three second-half goals amid a frenzy of substitutions.

Postecoglou again fielded a 3-4-2-1 formation, attempting a typical passing style, but the Socceroos were regularly forced into turnovers against a top-class opponent and barely created a chance on goal.

Socceroos v Brazil pic special

Australia faces world number three Germany and number four Chile at the Confederations Cup, along with African champions Cameroon (ranked 32nd) but Postecoglou said he wouldn’t change his approach despite the Brazil thrashing.

“You never like getting defeated and you don’t like a heavy defeat, particularly at home,” Postecoglou said.

“That always has an effect, it doesn’t have to be a negative effect.

“From our perspective, it’s about preparing for that game in a week’s time.

“We get on a plane tomorrow. It’ll be good for us to get over there and start knuckling down in our preparation for that game.

“We’ll be ready for that.

“Tonight, we had some objectives to get out of the game, for the most part we achieved them, but we failed to deliver in others.”

Postecoglou elaborated that those objectives included getting game-time into key players, including Mark Milligan, Bailey Wright, James Troisi, Tim Cahill and Trent Sainsbury.

He also acknowledged world-class opponents, who Australia will face in Russia, would capitalise on errors, like that from Wright in the first minute which proved costly.

“When you play against the best sides they’ll punish mistakes,” Postecoglou said.

“It’s something we haven’t done for a while. We paid the price for it.

“From our perspective what’s more important was the reaction after that. For the rest of the half we were pretty good.

“The boys were pretty disciplined in their organisation. We minimised their threats and had a couple of small moments ourselves.

“Second half I’ll take responsibility for that, I made a lot of changes, we got very disjointed. They capitalised on that.”

The Australia coach reserved special praise for Milos Degenek in defence, while he said it was great to give debutant Ajdin Hrustic an opportunity and he’s likely to have more in Russia.

Postecoglou said the Socceroos had got through the game unscathed with no injuries, despite a head knock to Trent Sainsbury, meaning there will be no changes to the 23-man squad which leaves for Russia on Wednesday.
