The Fox8 sport-reality series returns to screens in June with Roar manager Ange Postecoglou taking over as the program's head coach following in the footsteps of John Kosmina (season one, Sydney FC) and Ernie Merrick (season two, Melbourne Victory).

Furlong will be joined in series three by a soon-to-be-named co-host. For the first two series, Irish singer and football fan Brian McFadden co-hosted with Furlong and Amy Taylor (series one).

Series two winner Luke Pilkington hailed the show as vital in giving his career a swift leg up.

He moved from his hometown of Canberra to start full time training with Melbourne Victory late last year and said the opportunity and exposure Football Superstar gave him was a massive boost.

"I have gone from playing with my local football club in Canberra to training full-time alongside professionals every day," he said. "It doesn't get much better than that.

"Anyone who is serious about a career in playing football should turn up for try-outs and give it a shot."

The winner of Football Superstar will receive a contract with Brisbane Roar and a one year university scholarship. The show is open to males aged between 16 and 21 with the next stage of the tryouts on Sunday at Perry Park in Brisbane's Bowen Hills.

Football Superstar producer Marty Benson told au.fourfourtwo.com the standard of players attending the nationwide trials is getting stronger each year.

"Every year we have to up the ante and once again I think the challenges take the boys out of their comfort zone," he said. "And I do think we're helping build up the game in this country.

"The main thing to make the show have good hosts and don't focus all the time on football. It's a combination of sport and entertainment that makes it so popular. It's not just for football fanatics."
