"I've got no doubt Melbourne Victory will be there at the end and you don't want to go into a finals series not having beaten them, or any side really," Postecoglou said.

"It's really important against another team who will be a contender and we made a statement in terms of getting three points.

"Also it's at home and we want to be a good side at home, we want to give our supporters some cheer here and make teams fear coming here. So for all those points it was good to get the win."

He added: "They're good signs, because when you get to the big games at the business end of the season, you're going to have to defend for your life at some stage, so it's good to know that we can do that if we need to."

Victory looked the more likely of the two sides to claim a second-half winner after Robbie Kruse levelled scores early in the second stanza, before Jean Carlos Solorzano clinched a late winner.

Postecoglou added: "Full credit to the boys, we were running on empty and it was a fantastic effort.

"We're very disappointed with the goal we conceded just after half time because we had done a lot of good work in the first half and everything was working smoothly, but that kind of knocked the wind out of us.

"It was going to take a massive effort, and it wasn't pretty.

"We've played better this year for sure, but it was a good sign in the fact that this team is resilient and it was great to get a point against a dangerous opposition."

Postecoglou added he was delighted to see Solorzano get his maiden strike for the Roar.

"He's still not 100 percent so we're kind of nursing him along. We know he can finish, we watch it every day at training," he said.

"He's a fantastic finisher, a predator around the box."

Brisbane's next match is away to Sydney FC on Saturday October 30.
