Ex-Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou's new club Yokohama F. Marinos have failed to qualify for the 2018 AFC Champions League (ACL) after an extra-time 2-1 defeat to Cerezo Osaka in the Japanese Emperor's Cup final on Monday.
Victory in the cup decider would have seen Yokohama, who finished fifth in the J.League in 2017, secure their spot in the continental competition.
Instead, fourth-placed Kashiwa Reysol qualify for the ACL play-offs, given Cerezo had already booked their spot by virtue of finishing third in the league.
Australian defender Milos Degenek was not involved for the Marinos in the final, where Kota Mizunuma scored the winner in the 95th minute during extra-time.
Sho Ito had headed Yokohama into an eighth-minute lead before Kazuya Yamamura levelled in the 65th minute.
Postecoglou will now take over as Yokokama coach for pre-season, with the final marking predecessor Erick Mombaerts last game in charge.
