The club hasn't spoken to the 29-year-old striker about his future yet and the 2007 Grand Final hero is keen for the process to begin.

"Obviously it's my last year... I know what I can do," he told au.fourfourtwo.com at Olyroo training this morning.

"Everyone knows knows what I can do, the club knows what I can do, so I'll just go out there and do what I do.

"If I have to fight for a positon, I have to fight for a position."

Ahead of the new season, Victory has signed Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano from ACL side Chonburi.

Along with Thompson, Danny Allsopp and youngster Nathan Elasi, the Melbourne forward structure looks to have depth.

It's possible that Thompson may not be an automatic starter for Ernie Merrick's side, admits Archie

"But saying that it's my last year and doors are going to open up. It's time for them [Victory] to get on their bikes pretty quick [regarding contract talks].

"Any door's good as long as the door's got a big dollar sign written on it... the larger the dollar sign the more attractive the door," he said with a trademark laugh.

"But there's a lot happening. It's my last year and I hope to do well with Melbourne Victory. I feel like it's time for something special to happen [at the club]."

Thompson – who's scored 29 goals for Victory in the last three years including five in the unforgettable 2007 A-League Grand Final - did not rule out a move to an Asian club after this season.

Meanwhile the former Belgian league star described his knee injury – sustained against China in last Feburary's World Cup qualifier – as "...very, very good.

"Now it's about getting fitness under my belt. I'll work hard. It's not an issue."

Thompson will miss Victory's opening round A-League blockbuster with Sydney to be at the Olympics. And he had consoling words for the other strikers who missed out on Beijing.

"Obviously I keep reading about poor Brucey [Djite] and [Nathan] Burnsy being left out but it's happened to me and that's sometimes football," he said.

"It's how you recover from it... it's that sort of stuff that makes you stronger. In saying that, I'm rapt that Arnie [U/23s coach Graham Arnold] has given me the opportunity."

And Thompson, in typical fashion, is gelling with this group of younger players well. In fact, he doesn't even feel like an over-age player.

"I feel like I'm half these guys' age because I'm just so immature."
