LIVERPOOL’S teenage keeper Dean Bouzanis is ‘in the mix’ for an Olyroo spot and could make his debut as early as next month, says Aussie Under 23 coach Graham Arnold.
“Dean has been looked at. Tony Franken (Socceroo goalkeeping coach) has spoken to him as has Pim Verbeek.
“He will be brought into the mix if he agrees to the Malaysian tournament,” Arnold said today.
The May tournament in Malaysia is a four-team hit-out for Arnold’s men on the road to Beijing in August.
However, what is complicating the situation is that Bouzanis may have already agreed to play for the Greek Under 19s later that month in their Euro qualifiers.
Bouzanis’s agent Terry Palapanis was not available to confirm the players’ current position. Bouzanis, 17, a former Sydney FC squad keeper has dual citizenship and has been enthusiastically courted by the Greeks in recent months.
He has also turned out on three occasions for the Greek Under 19s this year but still remains eligible to play for Australia.
Arnold also pointed to the depth in the goalkeeping ranks currently with other keepers on his Olyroo radar, such as Reading’s Adam Federici and Perth’s Tando Velaphi all in the mix for the three spots in the 18-man squad following the expected exclusion of regular number one Danny Vukovic (due to an expected ban following February’s grand final).
Arnold even suggested Socceroo number one Mark Schwarzer could be used if necessary but strongly hinted that his preferred option would be attacking weapons for his over-age component.
The Malaysia tournament may also feature some other fringe Olyroos. Arnold said that he’d met former Queensland Roar and now Nurnberg’s Dario Vidosic as well as Matt Spiranovic, who he described as both being “very positive for playing for Australia.
“Dario has come on in leaps and bounds and their football manager was very complimentary about he’s progressed.
“And I’ll be very keen to see him as soon as I can whether it’s in the Malaysian tournament or just after that.”
