Gary Van Egmond's stellar A-League season could be the platform for a coaching role with the national team after Socceroos coach Graham Arnold said yesterday he was keen to give the Jets supremo some experience with the national team.
"I'm a good friend of Dutchy [Van Egmond]. I'm not a coach who wants to hide anything from other coaches and Dutchy's a good young Aussie coach. I'd like if possible for him to come into camp and for us to pass on our knowledge to him.
"It'll be good for him to experience international football and see what we do. It's totally different to club football."
Like Arnold, Van Egmond is a former Socceroo who has also played in Holland. The Jets boss has been roundly applauded for his tactical awareness and ability to communicate his ideas during Newcastle's storming run to the A-League preliminary final in February.
But that doesn't mean Arnold wants to distance himself from his current assistant John Kosmina, who he says has his full support. "I've had a chat with John and I'm 100 percent supportive of him. I'll be discussing his role with us over the next few weeks. I've only been back two days and I haven't had anyone at the FFA say you can't [have Kossie].
"I think he's served his punishment [at Adelaide] and he hasn't done anything like that at international level as an assistant coach. He's got a great record at A-League level over the past two years."
Arnold also said that he's received – and knocked back – two overseas coaching offers.
